Give the gift of clear sight this Christmas
28/11/2006 by davina.
As the festive season approaches, Cheltenham based opticians Keith Holland & Associates are urging parents not to lose sight of the benefits of regular eye examinations.
A recent independent report has revealed how the fear of cost is deterring people from making sight test appointments.
Despite children confessing to suffer from regular headaches and sore or irritated eyes, parents are waiting to afford a pair of spectacles before booking an eye examination.
However, help is available - children under 16 qualify for free sight tests and spectacles are available at a reduced cost.
The Christmas holidays are the perfect time to have an eye test and as times change, so do spectacles. No longer ‘un-cool’, spectacles are now designed to suit and compliment the wearer and this change has been mirrored in the current Children’s collection of frames. Contact lenses are also available to children as young as 5 years old.
Keith Holland & Associates are able to look beyond the standard eye examination to the vision as a whole. Many children who are diagnosed as dyslexic or who are underachieving at school, can show simple vision problems that are not picked up in standard eye examinations.
Assessment and treatment is possible at any age and is not confined to children, however, the sooner the problems are spotted and tackled – the less misery for the individual and the better their quality of life.

Local Optician Supports National Eye Week
05/09/2006 by davina.
Cheltenham based opticians Keith Holland & Associates are urging local residents not to lose sight of the benefits of having regular eye examinations in the wake of an independent report released in preparation for National Eye Week (11th – 17th September).
The report reveals how more than one in three of us haven’t had an eye examination for five years or more and that the fear of cost is deterring people from making an appointment to see their optometrist.
Despite 66% of Gloucestershire residents confessing to suffer from regular headaches and 31% complaining of sore or irritated eyes, over a third of residents are waiting to afford a pair of spectacles before booking an appointment for an eye examination.
Throughout National Eye Week, Keith Holland & Associates will be running an advice and appointment hotline where help will be on hand to offer advice on eligibility for FREE NHS standard eye tests, reduced costs for businesses and general eye care information.
Both branches will have free information packs available during the week – simply pop in to receive your free copy.
The branch based at St Pauls Medical Centre is also home to Cheltenham’s only Optos Machine – which provides digital images of the retina (the back of the eye). Conventional examinations will only see 30 degrees of the retina at a time, whereas the Optomap Retinal Examination allows us to see 200 degrees of the retina and is available almost instantly, allowing rapid detection of potential diseases.
Free NHS Eye tests are available to those eligible, including all adults over the age of 60.
An eye examination takes between 20-40 minutes depending on your medical history, your age and your general lifestyle –but its time and money well spent as not only could it help you see more clearly, it can help improve your general well being and, in extreme cases, even save your life!
